Will it ever be affordable, or will it always remain the preserve of the super-rich?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s begin by looking at some statistics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>The First Tourists in Space<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Virgin Galactic<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Craft: VSS Unity<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Owner: Richard Branson<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Length: 18.3 metres<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Wingspan: 8.2 metres<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Pilots: 2<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Passengers: 4<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Launchpad: Spaceport America, New Mexico<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>VSS Unity was released by a twin-fuselage carrier jet dubbed VMS Eve (named after Branson\u2019s mother) to an altitude of 50,000 feet (15,240 metres).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unity was released and soared by rocket power in an almost vertical climb through the outer fringe of Earth\u2019s atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the summit of its flight some 89km above the New Mexico desert, the crew experienced a few minutes of weightlessness before making a gliding descent back to Earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The whole flight lasted about 90 minutes<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>When will commercial services begin?<\/strong> 2022<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How much will it cost?<\/strong> $250,000 per ticket<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Blue Origin<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Craft: New Shepard<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Owner: Jeff Bezos<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Length: 18 meters<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Crew (including passengers): 5<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Launchpad: West Texas<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his crew took off from Launch Site One, West Texas in their sub-orbital rocket ship where the capsule separated before climbing to 100km (62 miles) above Earth. This is known as the Karman Line and is where space officially begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the rocket ship descended back to Earth using drag brakes to bring it safely down, Jeff Bezos and his crew safely parachuted back down in the capsule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Blue Origin uses advanced science with a fully automated two-part rocket system that requires no pilots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The launcher houses the rocket engine and propellant and separates after launch, flying back by itself to return to the launch pad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The top of the craft \u2013 the crew capsule \u2013 safely lands using parachutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(The top of the craft is equipped with a crew ejection system for added safety.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Did they really get all the way to \u2018space\u2019?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>US institutes like the USAF define space at 80km (50 miles) above sea level.<\/li><li>The Federation Aeronautique Internationale (FAI) defines it as 100km (62 miles) above sea level.<\/li><li>The Karman line is defined at almost 100km as well.<\/li><li>NASA mission control defines the beginning of space at 122km (76 miles).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There is actually some debate about where space begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Who went the highest?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Virgin Galactic<\/strong>: 55 miles<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Blue Origin<\/strong>: 62 miles<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>International Space Station<\/strong>: 248 miles<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Impact on the Economy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>$350bn<\/strong> = current value of the space industry<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>$2.7tn<\/strong> = the total value of the space industry by 2040<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u00a3400bn<\/strong> = predicted value of UK Space Industry by 2030<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>$30bn a year<\/strong> = Estimated revenue to be generated by the 1500 Satellites to be deployed by Elon Musk to blanket the globe in internet services<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>About us<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>JP Aero supplies a wide range of industrial and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jpaerocom.co.uk\/products\/space-industry-fasteners\/\"><strong>aerospace fasteners for the space industry<\/strong><\/a>.
